It’s a game of suspense, investigation, and psychological dread.
You are an Investigator: Each player creates an ordinary person – perhaps a grizzled detective, a curious academic, a tenacious journalist, or a quiet doctor. These are your characters, thrust into extraordinary, terrifying circumstances.
The Keeper Guides You: One person, known as the “Keeper” (that’s me!), acts as the storyteller and referee. I’ll describe the scenes, play the roles of non-player characters, unveil the mysteries, and orchestrate the horror that lurks in the shadows.
Investigate & Interact: Most of the game involves exploring eerie locations, interviewing strange characters, uncovering hidden clues, and piecing together terrifying puzzles. You’ll describe what your character does, and I’ll tell you what happens next.
Skill Checks with Dice: When your character tries something risky or uncertain (like sneaking past a guard, researching ancient texts, or shooting a monster), you’ll roll percentile dice (two ten-sided dice to generate a number from 1 to 100). You’ll try to roll a number equal to or lower than your character’s relevant skill rating.
Sanity is a Resource: A unique and crucial element of Call of Cthulhu is the Sanity mechanic. Witnessing unspeakable horrors or encountering forbidden knowledge will test your character’s mind. Losing Sanity can lead to temporary madness, phobias, or even permanent psychological changes.
Survival is Key: Unlike many games where “winning” means defeating all enemies, in Call of Cthulhu, victory often means escaping with your life – and perhaps your mind – intact. It’s a game of suspense, tough choices, and atmospheric dread.
